There are lots of light gun games and rail shooters that have come and gone. These include all time classics such as House of the Dead and Time Crisis as well as the not so popular ones like Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. But one series that has always stood out in my eyes was Inti Creates’ Gal*Gun, a series where you have to fight off dozens of girls who have fallen in love with you at first sight. The only way to keep them away is to shoot them with your Pheromone Shots to put them in such a state of euphoria that they faint. Well now we have the sequel to Gal*Gun and Gal*Gun: Double Peace with Gal*Gun 2.

Gal*Gun 2

In Gal*Gun 2 you’ve come into possession of Pheromone Goggles that allows you to see demons and the Demon Sweeper, a gun that allows you to either shoot at the demons or suck them up to capture them. However, these goggles are invisible to any one who is not a demon or angel. They also come with a side-effect: whoever wears the goggles cannot take them off and they also make the wearer insanely popular with women. Together with the angel who gave you the goggles, Risu, you have to reach a reach a quota of capture demons before the end of the month in game time.

The story mainly serves to justify the existence of another Gal*Gun game. There are other hidden stories you can discover by talking to your friends Nanako and Chiru after giving them snacks that you get by playing through the game. Aside from that, the game itself is the same addicting light gun fun if you’re familiar with the prevoius titles.

You go through each day choosing which courses you want to run through and fend off waves of girls who relentlessly chase after you. This time around there are other types of missions you can do, such as defend either one or several groups of girls from being attacked by floating mini demons. Another mission type involves searching for hidden items while avoiding getting overrun by hordes of school girls as well as female teachers. As you go through the story, you obtain a list of missions you can attempt in whatever order that you want. So you can choose to focus on the main story, one of the side stories involving a specific character, play as many free missions as you want to build up your quota or just to play at your leisure.

Gal*Gun 2Now not only do you shoot at demons who possess some of the girls that attack you, but your new gun, the Demon Sweeper, can now suck up and capture demons for more points, giving you more options to go through the game. Once upgraded the gun can also move loose items and objects and even remove the clothes of your would be assailants. While that adds another point to the fan-service rating, it’s also another way to merely suck up as many demons as you can while stopping the girls simultaneously. This is helpful since you can’t shoot and vacuum up the demons at the same time. A perfect strategy! Or you can just enjoy sucking up clothes as another fun way of stopping the girls from attacking you.

Another new feature that was part of Gal*Gun VR that made its way to Gal*Gun 2 is making the girls Lovestruck, which will have them completely stop in their tracks as you gaze into their eyes with your targeting reticle. The longer you keep your eyes locked, the more a heart meter will begin to fill up. Once it reaches its max, their entire bodies will be turned into giant weak points. Once shot, the targeted girl as well as any others nearby will all instantly go down simultaneously.

Gal*Gun 2While this game is mindlessly fun, there are still a few things that could be improved. For one thing, in the story the character you control wears something that looks like a VR headset. That’s because many of the assets from the previous game, Gal*Gun VR, were reused for Gal*Gun 2. The menu even has the look and feel of a game designed for the PlayStation VR. That being said, there’s no current VR support for Gal*Gun 2, so the menu feels a little out of place for the game.

Another issue is that the game can feel a little too simple to play, especially if you played the previous games before. In the main game, there are mainly four focal points to shoot: Face, Bust, Hips, and Legs. Each girl that you come across has one of the aforementioned areas as a weak point that will instantly have them fall. You don’t have to be a marksman to hit these areas, but even people who don’t play light gun shooters, or shooting games in general will have an easy time. You can even get good enough to be able to the closest thing to shooting from the hip by paying attention to the sounds the reticle makes as it hovers over a target. When you glance over a target, you can hear one out of four sound effects to tell you where you should be aiming to quickly get the edge you need for a higher score. You’ll try to find ways to score the most points as possible going through each level. There’s even a score attack mode you can play if you want to completely ignore the story and just score points.

Gal*Gun 2

If you like low difficulty light gun based games, then you’ll have a great time with Gal*Gun 2. Even if rail shooters aren’t your thing and you want to play a goofy arcade style game, then Gal*Gun 2 is at least worth a try. If you are interested in the story mode, then unlocking the game’s eight different endings will have you playing for a good while.
