The premise for this spin-off is simple: all of the characters from the previous Senran Kagura games are thrown into a special island where summer is eternal and every one enters a water gun competition called Peach Beach Splash. The winners get whatever wish they want granted.

Senran Kagura Peach Beach SplashIn Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash (known as PBS in game) is a 3rd person shooter with card game elements instead of a hack-n-slash action game like in prior entries. Similar to games like Titanfall ,where in addition to your weapons start the game with, you acquire more in the middle of each match. These range from special attacks, assists, and defense buffs as well as weapons you start each round with such as an assault rifle water gun or a water mini gun. Each weapon also gives your character a water jet attached to their hips used to dash around the arena. The only ammo you use in this game is the water in your guns, which you reload by just holding down a button to build up more pressure to fire more shots. The more you soak the enemy, the further their health drops; once it hits zero, then they are down. Teammates can revive downed characters but if someone from the opposing team gets to them first, the game changes to a different mode where you spray the girls at certain parts of their body to take them out faster. This also leads to an interactive scene, where depending on where you decide to spray them, they lose an article of clothing.

The game features several different modes: the main story mode, a side story mode, and the online multi player mode. In each mode you complete stages, get cards to equip your loadout, or use duplicates to strengthen the ones you already own. Some cards also increases a character’s maximum health.

Senran Kagura Peach Beach SplashGraphically, the game looks like any of the other Senran Kagura games. Heavy anime tones fit the style of gameplay with “jiggle” physics everywhere, but unless this is your first time with a Senran Kagura game, it’s to be expected. If you have a thing against fan service in your games, chances are high that you would never pick up a Senran Kagura game to begin with. There are hundreds of collectibles you can get by either unlocking them through playing either the single or multiplayer modes, or gaining money to buying the items to complete your collection from the store. They range from classic costumes from older games to dozens of other swimsuits and costumes to put on the characters. There’s also a diorama mode where you can line up and model up to five characters on screen and use the PS4 screen capture to preserve the scenes.

Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash has some minor graphical glitches that occur while some of the menus loaded, as well as random issues where AI companions literally run in circles rather than attacking the enemies. The biggest problem I had playing this game was the online mode. The matches are laggy and glitchy to play through to the point where when you actually manage to actually get into a match, the server would lose its connection. There’s no local multiplayer, so unless you get lucky in finding matches, you’ll just be playing this game solo.

Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash

If you want a fun game where you see cute ninja girls have water gun battles with hundreds of collectibles, then you’ll want to get your hands on Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash. You’re not really going to find tactical action on the level of Counterstrike or Titanfall, but it’s still a fun game to give a shot.
