Avengers World #1 Review
Writers: Jonathan Hickman and Nick Spencer / Art: Stefano Caselli
One would think that after writing an epic crossover series such as Infinity, Jonathan Hickman would take a break. Wrong! He is immediately at it again with a brand new rendition of the Avengers now called Avengers World. This is one of the few comics that is kicking off Marvel’s “All-New Marvel Now” campaign. Does it stack to Hickman’s other Avenger’s book? Lets dive in and find out.
Avengers World #1 takes place  after the events of Infinity. The Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D are doing a joint operation investigating weird phenomenons that are in different parts of the world. When different Avengers teams experienced trouble or lost communication from the helacarrier, Captain America and Bruce Banner (who looks like an Abercrombie & Fitch model) have to determine what the main threat is and find out how to stop it. The story so far seems like it is setting you up for something bigger. I like the idea that there are different Avengers groups that are scattered all over the world rather than being in one centralized point. Especially since there are over 20 different active members on the team, being in smaller groups will allow superheroes such as Smasher, for more character development. One of the downsides I had about the book was that they did not do a good explanation on why the Avengers were scattered across the world. I understood that they came back and is in the process of cleaning the mess Thanos but, what I do not understand is if all the weird things happening around the world was because of Thanos or something different. Since this is the first book, I will give it some slack and see if it builds into something more.Â
The art was done Stefano Caselli who has mostly worked on “The Amazing Spiderman” art. Caselli knows how draw backgrounds. The areas around the characters are amazing. There is one scene in the book where Starbrand and his team are trying to find out where they are and there is an amazing out shot where you see an eerily quiet town. The character art on the other hand, I was not a fan of. Some of the characters like Maria Hill or Bruce Banner did not sell me just on the way they looked. When I first read the book, It showed Captain America is talking casually to a person. I had no idea the person he was talking to was Bruce Banner until page 3 when he said his name!
From the most part, The book definitely has my interest. Hickman and Spencer are very good writers and I know they are leading to a bigger picture. With a good direction on where the writing is going, I have confidence that this series could be just as good or even better than the Avengers Now series which is amazing. I would recommend to go out and get this book.
