CFG Best Games of the Year 2017

2017 has been an excellent year for gaming. Several publishers brought their A game to create great gaming experiences and instant masterpieces. Of course, trying to pick only one game is impossible so, we decided to break it down in different categories for 2017. The CFG gang voted on each of the categories and here are our results:

Best Platformer: Super Mario Odyssey

When Nintendo announced that a new Mario Game would be coming out during the Switch’s first year, fans across the world rejoiced. Super Mario Odyssey successfully shows why no one can beat a good ole Mario platformer! With several stages and massive amount of collecting to do without feeling overwhelmed, Super Mario odyssey easily made it our pick as best platformer.

Best Mobile Game: Animal Crossing Pocket Camp

In less than a month, Animal Crossing Pocket Camp has blown us away. It feels like this series was meant to be on the go for your phone. I am pretty sure there are other simulations like this out there in the mobile game world, but for some reason Animal Crossing Pocket Camp catches our attention the most.

Best Handheld: Metroid: Samus Returns

It is no secret that Nintendo was on its A game this year! To no surprise, the CFG Games crew could not praise Metroid: Samus Returns any higher. With the classic like feel of its predecessors (being that this is also a remake), Metroid: Samus Returns improves on a classic game and transforms it into incredible experience on the 3DS.

Best First Person Shooter: Wolfenstein II: New Colossus

We were on the fence about labeling this game as a First Person Shooter. Why? Because Wolfenstein II has such an engrossing story and is a single player game, it could have been the best action adventure game this year! This game is visually stunning and blows away all the other first person shooters in this category with its campaign alone. We URGE you to play Wolfenstein II: New Colossus.

Best Indie Game: Cuphead

This beautiful indie game was in the making for several years. It was very much worth the wait!  With its fully hand drawn animations (that’s right, HAND DRAWN), Cuphead successfully gives the player the 1930’s feel of rubberband cartoons. There are so many amazing bosses that you fight all the way to the final boss, leaving you feeling fully accomplished upon finishing the game.

Best Local Multiplayer Game: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Even though Mario Kart 8 was released originally on the Wii U, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe brings a massive amount of fun and fury in local multiplayer! The graphics in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are much more cleaner and crisper than its predecessor. The new battle mode options and additional characters make this a must have if you want a fun local multiplayer experience.

Best Action Adventure Game: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Of course this game has to be on the list! The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild reintroduces you to the time honored tradition of our hero, Link, who must rescue the Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon. Breath of the Wild, however, changes the style so drastically from previous Zeldas so immensely, you cannot compare it. The world allows the player to do virtually anything. You want to climb that mountain in the distance? Go ahead, do it. Want to attack that chicken? Do it, but we do not advise it for your own health! With its style, scenery, and action, Breath of the Wild is our pick this year.

Best Online Multiplayer: Splatoon 2

There were several games with great muliplayer experiences, but at CFG Games, Splatoon 2 had a special place in our hearts. We cannot stop playing the many modes Splatoon 2 provides online. CFG Games even has a Splatoon 2 team that streams monthly! Splatoon 2 is fast paced, messy, and just loads of fun!

Best Fighting Game: ARMS

ARMS is a uniquely fun brawler with outstanding multiplayer modes, superb post launch (free!) DLC support, and a plethora of colorful characters. Whether you’re playing the highly competitive Ranked Matches or the newly added Party Crash mode, ARMS will keep you reaching for those Joy Cons with its simple, yet engaging, rock-paper-scissor inspired gameplay.

Best RPG of the year: Persona 5

Persona 5 is the RPG that brings fresh life to turned based games. The story, art, music, and battle mechanics are all incredible. Even fans of this style of RPG will have an incredible experience playing this. There’ll hopefully be more to come!

Game of the Year 2017: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Breath of the Wild won over most of the reviewers here at CFG Games. The game’s vast world and characters are so fun to play and watch!
