After death, sinners go to Hell. But hell isn’t just fire and brimstone, it’s an urban nightmare full of tortured souls, demons, and the occasional visit to bar. Hot Damn’s main character, Teddy Graham, (Yes, like the snacks) is a former drug addicted sinner doomed to spend eternity in hell. What could be for fun than living in the city of Hell, possessing the living, and attending group therapy sessions that spend every moment confirming what a horrible person you were in life?

The first issue has a good flow to it. It transitions smoothly from exposition while forming conflicts and an interesting plot. Overall, this issue is not very action-packed, the setup and characterization is gripping enough to keep readers interested. Valentin Ramon’s illustrations add a richly detailed, and gritty layer to this unique spin on HD3Hell and its residents. He also uses variations in color tones for Heaven, Hell, and Earth, giving each realm its own, unique feel. If the visuals don’t immediately grab a reader’s attention, then the language sure will. A warning to readers; this content is not safe for work, or for children (if the title Hot Damn didn’t already tip you off.) Though it is certainly far from being PG, the language is definitely more of an enhancement than a distraction.

Issue #1 of Hot Damn is only 23 pages long, but it does a good job at packing so much information into it without making the story feel rushed. The world it forms places a different spin on the relationships between Heaven and Hell, and the people living in them. The issue also closes with an ending that is sure to lead #2 in an interesting direction.
