Superman Unchained #5 Review

What do you get when you have two large forces in the comic book industry coming together to make a well know superhero even more epic?  The Superman Unchained Series is the answer to that! Written by Scott Snyder and the art of Jim Lee, Superman Unchained is coming to be one of my favorite Superman stories. This is surprising because I am not a big Superman fan in the least bit!

In this latest chapter of Superman Unchained #5, Louis has been captured by ascension and the leader goes in an in-depth monologue (shocker, Louis is hearing a villain’s plan while being captured … again) explaining his ultimate goal. Meanwhile, Superman and Wraith are being attacked by Russian droids that were built to take the man of steel down. The fight was a vicious one but eventually, Superman and Wraith took care of it and flew to the fortress of solitude where Wraith was questioning Superman’s moral values and boy does it get heated. Let me first say this about the writing from Scott Snyder…. WOW. Snyder successfully put 4 different story angles in a 34 page comic book and made it flow so fluidly. The book starts you off when Clark was a kid and shows a key moment in his young life that is a molding point making him the man that he is today. While telling that story trough out the comic, he goes to the present day explaining ascension’s plan as well as the conflict Superman is having not only physically with the giant robots, but mentally with Wraith questioning him on his ethics. The best part of this book is when Wraith is trying to make Superman understand why he is so loyal to his country. I will not ruin it but, it is very impacting and you should read this book for yourself to find out!

The art style from Jim Lee really compliments the story. The action sequences were flawlessly done and even the flashback parts were incredible. What makes Jim Lee so good is the amount of definition he puts into objects. From facial tones all the way to the background/scenery, he puts so much definition in what he draws that you feel the impact of environment or situation. One of my of my favorite parts in this was the imagination scenes and you see an older Clark Kent, heartbroken because he is alone. He shows a man so hurt that a real person could feel it.

I have to say that Snyder and Lee is making me like a character that I had no interest in before. The story is getting better and better in each chapter and the art is consistent and is simply stunning.  This is also introducing a new side of Superman before. He seems more agitated and more gun ho. It does not follow his normal boy scout persona. This is a must read especially you the reader is a DC fan.
