The Unwritten Apocalypse #1 Review

The Unwritten Apocalypse #1 (of 12)

DC – Vertigo Comics
Written by Mike Carey
Art by Peter Gross
Cover by Yuko Shimizu

The Unwritten Apocalypse, vol 2 #1, kicks off with a simply beautifully written first page. Like any good novel, a great first page is key to a really great story. The writing throughout the first issue is well crafted and everything you would hope it would be. In this first issue of the story arc deals with the central character drawing himself back to the world through brief interludes where his consciousness seemingly travels through different characters – the encounter with the Mad Hatter is particularly delicious. The effect works really well as the story builds to a quality pay off on the last page which really sets the scene for what is to follow.

The art, from the Yuko Shimizu cover to the delightful interiors by Peter Gross, compliment the story beautifully. The closing page in particular, with minimal text but with a stark backdrop perfectly counterpoints the slow build in the book. This is a promising start to what should be a quality series.

Overall Score 8/10
