Witch Craft Works Season 2 Finale Review

Aired: 1/5/2014 – 3/24/2014 – Warning: Spoilers!

Hello everyone! Now, we are at the close of the season of this awesome anime! Today, I will be reviewing episodes 7 through 12! We find out more about the plot, characters, and there is still a mystery afoot even though this season has ended. I can see that this series is going to be a popular one! I will also rate the season at the end.

We will start off with a recap of the what has happened. Kagari is the same as ever; over protective, quiet, and surprisingly comical. Takamiya is always wanting to help in any kind of way; determined and also getting stronger. We all know now that Takamiya has something sealed inside him that a lot of the Tower witches covet. Kagari is there, as well as his sister Kasumi, to protect him from such attacks. In this last half of the series, we learn more about Ayaka and Honoka’s past and how they are connected. Super exciting, right?! Also, we learn how this plot is being brought together. Finally there are some new characters, good and evil.

Our main protagainists, Ayaka Kagari and Honoka Takamiya character to me seem to have grown a bit. We leave off with Ayaka being mysterious as their chemistry teacher, Mikage, which is also a part of the Workshop, telling Takamiya that Ayaka is hiding Medusa for a specific purpose. Takamiya and Ayaka go back to his place and find not only is Medusa is there, but all her underlings which are kept secret. Later on, Ayaka’s mother Kazune comes to visit the Takamiya household until her mother comes to visit and sees some of the tower witches. Ayaka ensues a fight with her mother to protect Takamiya to the point of teaming up with Medusa to stop her, inevitably failing. Ayaka and Takamiya are locked up as they chose not to hand over Medusa because if questioned, Kazune will take action toward Takamiya as Mikage had predicted. However, much to Kazune’s dismay, Medusa is retrieved by a different Workshop witches for questioning and locked away once again.

We move forward with dreams that Takamiya has been having about Kagari. He sees how she was prior to the series and her mission to find him and stay by his side. Now, at school, the students do not like Takamiya with Ayaka – making it difficult for them to be together. We find later on that Ayaka arranged for Takamiya to be the Student Council President much to the school chagrin except her mother. Later on, the school is under attack by the school’s delinquent Rinon Otometachibana, whom we find out later is also a Workshop witch. She challenges him to a fight – ultimately winning the battle and earning the schools respect.  Moving forward, we move on the Honoka’s magical training, as we all know he wants because he wants to be at Ayaka’s side whenever there is a battle.

Now, we find that Kazune is looking at a strange symbol on the wall and figures it is a bomb, but does not know who or why it is planted until the witch, Weekend, appears. Weekend explains she is aware of how the head Workshop Witch Kuzune can keep the town from magical damage. She continues to reveal the entire town is in danger and her hostage sets the bomb. Kazune loses all her magical power and is held captive until Weekend’s demands of having Takamiya is accomplished. Ayaka and Takamiya are at the school when the bomb goes off and meets up with some the Workshop witches Rinon, Atori Kuramine, Touko Hio, Natsume Mikage, and of course Kasumi. They render Ayaka unconscious and lock both her and Honoka away to protect them from Weekend. Weekend sends a doll and finds Honoka to advise if he does not go to her the entire town will be destroyed. He and Ayaka bust out at a cost to Honoka. Ayaka goes out on her own to fight Weekend while leaving Atori in the care of Takamiya. We find Takamiya is in a different dimension with Mikage as a guide – explaining where they are and also him being the one whom erased Honoka and Ayaka’s memories.

We see Ayaka ensuing battle with Weekend, but she is not as strong without Takamiya being there to keep her invincible. Ayaka, however, finds a way to outsmart Weekend before Takamiya comes to stand with Ayaka in battle thus losing her mana. Takamiya is still unwell and finds that Weekend has destroyed not only the city, but the peoples souls were stored away and finds himself calling upon Evermillion to aid him. Evermillion arrives, but warns him it is his death that which will restore the city and every lost soul within. He accepts.

So, in my personal opinion, I wish there wasn’t so many confusing questions. Sometimes I would get lost, but somehow it came together at the right moments. Takamiya’s character was much the same, aside from him demonstrating that he does have a lot of magical talent, but will take more time to hone. Ayaka seems to be bent on protecting Takamiya – surprising a lot of us of going against her mother, and using Medusa’s powers. To go out alone to fight Weekend even though she was at a slight disadvantage, but Ayaka is her same monotone, serious, yet comical self. The some of the supporting characters were hilarious, especially Atori and her “first-aid” skills when she was caring for Takamiya. The animation I thought was decent, fight scenes seemed repetitive until they fought Medusa and Weekend. Also, seeing Chonoire in her true fighting form was awesome. She actually is very scary underneath her sweet-looking demeanor. We all know Kazune is a very strong witch, and I really want to see her fight! It’s like not being able to see some of the Bleach Captain’s Bankai’s! Anyway, plot for the season was good, but it could have flowed better and explain specific important details better as well.

Overall Score: 6/10
