Phoenix Comic Con Fanfest 2015 Con Report

PCC1Phoenix Comic Con held their annual Fanfest for a second year at the University of Phoenix Stadium again, a perfect convention just in time for the holidays. The holiday spirit brings a unique energy to the event. There are tons of wonderful goodies for every kind of nerd you know; they’ll be satisfied with the selection in the vendor section and artist alley. No genre was left behind as everyone brought their best work, and it was difficult to not bring out your wallet for the personalized gifts you could purchase.

PCC2When your funds are quickly (but happily) depleted, many wonderful guests were brought out this year. Fans are able to attend their panels and enjoy a more personal experience. I was lucky enough to attend Sean Maher’s panel; he’s one of the most charming panelists I’ve had the pleasure of seeing. While there was the obvious talk of Firefly and Serenity, this event gave a more intimate setting, and con goers were able to hear stories of his partner, their children, and their personal life. The stories he got to share were delightful and sweet. Everyone left that panel buzzing with a certain happiness and satisfaction of getting to hear more about a beloved actor after all these years. Also, as an open LBGT actor, he shared some wonderful sage advice to youthful attendees that may have been struggling with their own lives. Having such an open and proud person to share his own experience with people who needed it was a positive experience. I’m still smiling about it now and will remember it fondly.

PCC3There was also some wonderful free events to be enjoyed outdoors. Anything ranging from costume enthusiasts contests to cars on display for the fandoms we love, there was something for everyone. In the Birdcage area, Scottsdale Parkour came out and did a full display of their youth members showing off their skills. Seeing an adorable five year old girl do a back flip from hanging off a pole with no fear and landing perfectly was a sight to behold. Some of the children even had on Assassin’s Creed hoodies to feel like they were in the game. Who doesn’t want that?

I was also able to attend the preview panel for Phoenix Comicon coming up in early June next year, and you could already feel the excitement for the event in the room. The staff members present answered questions brought up by con goers and the improvements they are making for the upcoming event. It sounds like it’s going to be a doozy, and I’m looking forward to attending the event this coming year.
