The Few #1 Review

Story by: Dave McCluskey
Art by: Nicholas O’Gorman
Letters: Micah Myers

Damaged Comics presents ‘The Few’ – written by Dave McCluskey – is a story set firmly within the parameters of the zombie genre. Given the parallels with zombie tales, it is no surprise that Dave touches base with a number of the tropes of the genre. The initial set up is patient, with some foreshadowing in the form of a scene involving a sunbathing woman – a solid nod to the horror movie genre – and when McCluskey unleashes the action it is only after a firm set up for the book.
The slow burn start to the Few works well, both in terms of the genre, and of the story. McCluskey manages to maintain the flow of the plot over the course of the issue, keeping the pages ticking over, as the story builds and the action heats up.
The characters that pop up throughout the issue get their due time in the spotlight – we don’t get short-changed in terms of the characters. The dialogue is sufficiently authentic and varied considering the mix of the players on display. Given the aspects of gore and horror the dialogue does veer into adult tones and subjects, without being unnecessary or gratuitous.

On art we have Nicholas O’Gorman, who does a worthy turn on pencils and colors. The panels are well structured and Nicholas manages to keep the flow going throughout. There aren’t any aspects that jar with the artwork and the moments of horror are handled with suitable delight; in particular the blood splatter is (literally) to die for.
With the scene set and the action flowing, Dave builds further on his characters. As things degenerate the tension builds. The Few is nicely poised into the final third of the book and the culmination of the story is suitably satisfying and trails off foreshadowing events to come.
The Few proves that you can do a zombie story, one which borrows from the rich history of the genre, while keeping things fresh, and human. A tidy entry from the indie outfit of Damaged Comics.
