Green Lanterns Rebirth #1 Review

 

When a person thinks of the Green Lanterns, One would think people such as Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and the rebel himself, Hal Jordan. This is not the case in DC latest story of the green lanterns. In the new series, Green Lanterns Rebirth #1, the book introduces you to the newest members of the corp who is to defend Sector 2814.

The book sets up the reader fairly well for the major story arc. The lanterns are investigating a location and a person of interest. When they find the person, they get an uncontrolable amount of rage and attacks the lanterns. Cruz and Baz easily averts the situation but, they come to find out this rage incident was not only with the individual, but everyone that is in contact in the area!

In issue 1 of Green Lanterns Rebirth, the reader would quickly realize that Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz now have to work together to protect the earth. Writer Sam
Humphries does an excellent job showing the conflict both Baz and Cruz has between one another. In one panel, they seem they are working together to finish the task at hand but in the next panel, you see them doing a self monologue wondering why they should be teaming together. Some of the best parts of the this issue are the indivisual personalities Humphries brings to the forefront. Jessica Cruz was an extreme introvert during Forever Evil and she is still slowly getting over that. I am a fan of when a comic slowly shows progression of trying to better the individual. As for Simon Baz, you see him with his family and you get to know a little of his upbringing. During the new 52, Simon Baz was not used as much as I would have wanted him to. Hopefully in this new series, we will get to see both of the these lanterns shine bright. 

The art by Robson Rocha in the this book works well for the situations. Some of the best parts of the book are the whole page spreads that he contributes to the book. The one thing that I would like to have seen more of would be more expressions for the characters. To be fair, this book was 3/4th action so most what the reader would experience would be anger.  

Overall, the book is a good read. The reveal at the end is perfect for a reader to keep their interest in the issue. One is hoping that issue 2 will be even better than the first!
